A little bit of history…

Some people have recently asked about the small display of poppies flowering at the corner of the club next to the restaurant fire door. Members may be interested to know they have been grown from seed packets handed out at the funeral of long standing club member Eric Thomas – and Eric’s story is worth telling on this special weekend that highlights service to the nation

As a teenager Eric took part in the D-Day landings and spent the next year in gruelling transit across Europe witnessing unimaginable scenes including the aftermath of concentration camp liberations. Remarkably, during his return on noticing the suffering and privation of the new generation of German children and orphans, Eric took time to help ,starting a football team among other acts of kindness. Such selfless acts by men such as Eric did much to help further post war reconciliation among nations.

The poppies have been planted and tended as the Angel's small tribute to a man who will live long in many people's memories. Hopefully they can also provide a place for member's to pause and reflect.
