April Newsletter 2018

FINALS WEEKEND
The finals weekend was a great success and there was some great bowling to watch.  Unfortunately the Men’s Singles had to be played ahead of time as one of the finalists, Duncan Hanmore, was skipping a rink in the semi-final and Final of the (National) Liberty Trophy in Nottingham.  Kent won their semi-final convincingly but were narrowly defeated in the final by Lincolnshire.
Our other competitions were fun to watch, although the numbers attending were disappointing compared to “the old days”.  There was a splendid raffle, run by Isabel Manktelow and Diana Morgans, with invaluable help From Paul Buss, which raised exactly £250.00 for much-needed Ladies’ bowling funds.  If you bought tickets, I believe there are still some unclaimed prizes behind the bar.
After all the games, winners and runners-up were presented with their trophies and cash prizes, as were the top two teams in each of the leagues that ran all season.
Congratulations to Tom and Heather Young, the two Competition Secretaries, for all their hard work to make this weekend and all the competitions a great success.

DISABILITY BOWLS REPORT, 2017/18
Margaret and I are grateful as ever to the loyal band of helpers who support us on Friday mornings. Although we have fewer disabled bowlers than in the past it is not easy to predict how many will turn up each week unless they ring up and tell us when unable to come. This has led to one or two willing helpers making up the numbers, having kindly taken the trouble of reporting for duty.
That said, if all the players do turn up ( an unusual situation ) we can find ourselves short of helpers to service even the few rinks we regularly use  .Additional volunteers willing to turn up in case they are needed or to be on a reserve list would be therefore most welcome.  There is a list at reception where you can sign up or contact us (Peter or Margaret Swan) directly.  Those who do volunteer find it an enjoyable experience.
An enjoyable 7 – a – side match for the Brian Falloon trophy took place in February. It resulted in a narrow victory for Lorna Goldup’s Juniors.
The question of fitting a motor to one of our five wheelchairs was raised and investigated recently. Although the possibility has not been dismissed there seemed to be no overwhelming case for incurring the considerable expense involved as long as pushers are available. That is currently true of Friday mornings, but it is for the parent club to assess the need there may be among other Angel bowlers.
One firm based in Guiseley has quoted a figure of over £2000 and Remap, who fitted a motor at The Royals some years ago, are no longer able to do this now the item is commercially available.

SUMMER COMPETITIONS
Keep an eye on the noticeboard for details of the Summer Competitions – Men’s Singles, Ladies’ Singles, Open Singles, Drawn Pairs, Drawn Triples and for the second year our pairs competition for new bowlers and those bowlers whose name hasn’t yet risen to the top of the pile.  This is the Cyril Stares Trophy named in honour of a much loved and much missed former Captain and Chairman of our Summer Bowling.
You will find the atmosphere of summer bowling – leagues and competitions alike – is a more relaxed and almost light hearted version of those that take place in the winter season.  This is an ideal introduction to competitive bowling for those who have been up till now reluctant to put a toe in the water.
A notice will appear on the Competitions Noticeboard once the finals sheets for the winter competitions have been taken down and there will be entry forms in the box below to be placed once completed in the Competitions box next to the office door.  From the Summer Bowls Committee

QUIZ IN AID OF PARKINSON’S UK
A very successful evening for all involved was held on Saturday 7th April when we arrived to a balloon bedecked restaurant decorated in Parkinson’s blue.  We were welcomed by Leigh-Beth Stroud, their Fundraiser for the SE, who opened the proceedings followed swiftly by the Quiz.
Do you know which Roman Emperor completed the building of the Coliseum or the nickname of the Belgian national football team?  Well, we do now.
Heartiest congratulations to Elaine Hockley, daughter of Ernie, who worked so hard to make the evening such a success and raised £1296, plus £100 donation made on the night, making a grand total of £1396 in aid of Parkinson’s UK in memory of her Mother Maureen.

RAISING FUNDS FOR CHARITY BY HAVING FUN
On 24th of March the Men’s versus Ladies’ Presidents day was enjoyed by all who took part.  The day was held in aid of Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance and raised £217.00, £80 of which was from the donation by Babs Tester of a truly enormous chocolate rabbit, complete with an equally enormous chocolate carrot!.

Thank you to management for letting us have the rinks free of charge and thank you also to all the helpers, players and raffle ticket buyers who helped make the day such a success.

100 CLUB
The majority of renewals are now due and Tony Wheeler will be in touch.

Membership has been dropping recently and income from subscriptions barely covers the prize money. New members are always welcome. New and existing members can have more than one share (two shares doubles your chances of winning)!

We have received an application for a contribution towards additional sets of coaching Bowls (mainly the smaller sizes). If you have, or know someone who has, any size 00, 0 or 1s with a sensible bias (eg Vector or Ace) which are no longer required please let Liz Kemp know.

NEWS FROM MANAGEMENT
We are thrilled to have another 5 members throughout May and they are continuing to join in April.

We would like to welcome our new social committee.  If any member would like to volunteer to help run some of our great events please contact Jim Hawkes or let Paul at the bar know and would welcome any new ideas. Thank you to Elizabeth Kemp, Jenny Reynolds, Dave Fenner, and Beverly Bradshaw for getting this committee up and running.

We have some exciting social events being planned by our social committee in the summer.  We have recently sold out of ALL tickets to our trip to Ascot on Tuesday the 19thJune 2018.  Thank you to all those who have supported this event and we wish everyone going a great day at the races.  For all those going we will contact you nearer the time with all your details for the day.

Thank you to the organisers and participants in the quiz night in support of Parkinson’s UK (see separate report).  We are excited to announce will be hosting another Quiz Night on Friday the 18th May 2018 doors open at 7pm for quiz at 7.30pm for teams of up to 6 people. Watch this space for more details and there will be posters in the Club and online for details nearer the time.

English Bowls Youth Development Scheme
After the success of our Juniors in February Elliott Williams, Jack Young and Lewis Goldup have been selected to play at the finals in Horsham on 29th April. We wish them luck.
Brian Simmons Skills Competition 2018
After having to reschedule this competition it took place on 24th March 2018. The winner of the U11’s competition was Thomas Russell with an impressive score of 35. This also placed him second overall. The U18’s winner with a score of 41 was Lewis Goldup. Lewis was presented the Brian Simmons Skills Crystal Trophy by Sharon Chalklin who was the founder of this event. They will be presented their individual trophies by the sponsor Brian Simmons in the coming weeks.

A REMINDER
The AGM for the Ladies bowling section will be held on this Friday evening (20th April) at 7pm.  It is relevant to all ladies who bowl, no matter in what capacity.  Please attend if you can.
The Men’s bowling committee AGM has had to be postponed to the autumn due to the illness of Alec Newberry.  The date will be advised as soon as it is decided.

Men’s Committee AGM Postponed.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Men’s Committee AGM due to be held on April 19th, has had to be postponed. It will be rearranged for a date to be determined in September.
